Hello. Welcome to the Wardie Parent Council

We’re a group of Wardie parents and carers who volunteer our time and varied skills to support the school in educating and nurturing our children.

Our remit covers anything that improves our school community, making it a happier, healthier, fairer and safer place for all.

We do this by providing a link between parents and carers, the school, Edinburgh Council and the local area. Parent Council Members are, in effect, your voice. We represent your views and raise the issues that matter to you with the people who make decisions about your children’s education and welfare.

We also put on events and raise funds to help us achieve those objectives.

JOIN US, AND HELP US MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE TO WARDIE SCHOOL

Anyone who is a member of the Parent Forum (i.e. all parents/carers of children at Wardie) can join the Parent Council. We are always delighted to welcome new members. The more views, skills and backgrounds we have round the table, the better we can serve the needs of the school.

Why not come along to the next meeting and see what we get up to? Or email wardiepc@gmail.com

WHAT, WHEN, WHERE

Structure

The Parent Council is made up of a Chairman, a Vice Chair, a Treasurer and a Secretary, plus around 8-10 council members. We are all parents of children at Wardie School. Ideally we would like at least one parent from each year group to represent the different ages and learning stages of pupils.

Sub-groups

Within the Parent Council we have sub-groups who are tasked with delivering specific projects or campaigns being championed by the Parent Council. These groups meet separately and report back to the Council at our regular meetings.

Currently our sub-groups include:

Events and Fundraising

Formerly the PSA, this is the group that organises social and fundraising events for the school community. More about the PSA here.

Education

In the face of major changes in the governance of education in Scotland, this sub-committee will support the school through these changes and keep the parent body informed and engaged in the developments.

School Routes

Having published our Travel Plan, we are now working hard to implement the ideas and strategies that will make travelling to and from school safer for all.

Communications

Helping to improve the lines of communication between school, parents and pupils.

Meetings

These are held at least 6 times a year, usually in the school library from 7pm-9pm. At these meetings, the Council is joined by the head teacher and one or two local City Councillors.

We also have an AGM in October when we review our achievements, lay out our plans for the coming year and nominate and vote in office bearers (all over a glass or two of wine).

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Governance in Education: the Parent Council produced a response to the recent consultation document from the Scottish Government on Governance in Education.

Parent Council/PSA merger: we have now produced a single, simplified Constitution.

School Travel Plan: after completing a survey of how pupils and staff travel to school, we wrote and published a report on how we can make school journeys safer and healthier. Have you read the Travel Plan yet?

New school loos: thanks to some combined lobbying by the parent and pupil councils, Edinburgh Council agreed to upgrade all the school toilets in 2016.
